actually, rather than populating errorVariable, it seems to always throw

, Could you check with the latest snapshot 5.3.8.9-snapshot of lucee. It has works fine for me. Please check and report here back. It'll improve the status of the ticket.

I've checked this ticket with both ACF and lucee & confirmed the issue happened on lucee latest version 5.3.5.55-SNAPSHOT also. Lucee returns randomly as you said, but ACF doesn't do that. It works fine.
